Outside space is an extension of any home’s living area. But, how do you make the most out of a limited space, such as a balcony or a concrete patio?

Don’t be deterred if your outside area is small! It’s surprising how far a little creativity can go. Here’s our advice on making the most of a small outside space.

Spruce up the floor

If the floor is basic concrete, consider painting it with concrete paint or laying a little decking to give it some texture.

It’s amazing how different an outside space can look with a little less concrete!

Place some flower pots on the floor. These don’t have to take up huge amounts of space, as even a few bursts of colour will liven up the area!

If you’ve got dull-looking paving slabs underfoot, hire a jet washer to clean them up. While this sounds simple, it can make a marked difference.

For those longing for some grass but are unable to grow it, consider the possibility of synthetic grass. While this may not be appropriate for a balcony or roof terrace, it can certainly help make the most of a small garden.

Plant it up

Don’t have all your plants on the floor! Think ‘levels’. If you’re unsure then consider hiring a gardener to utilise your wall space and attach some wall pots.

Depending on the orientation of your space, and the variety of plant, you could fix up a trellis and grow a climbing plant from a pot.

Hanging pot plants from a balcony railing is a good way to brighten the space up. It also creates some privacy if you’re a bit overlooked.

If you’re feeling adventurous, grow a variety of things – flowers, shrubs, vegetables (you can do this even with a window box!)

Have a seating area

Invest in some chairs and a matching table. Somewhere to sit makes an outside area so much homelier! Opt for something that can be left outside and folded away when not in use. Accessorise with colourful cushions!

Hanging a few strings of outdoor lights will turn any outdoor space into a cosy grotto. Also, a few well-placed outdoor candles can create a great atmosphere on a summer’s evening.

Create some discrete storage

Just as storage inside your home is important, you may also need some for your outside space. If you don’t have space for a shed, create a storage solution.

Wooden crates have numerous uses, and are perfect if you’re limited on outside space. Turn them on their side to create a seat or a table. They will also double up as a storage unit in which you can safely stow your outdoor cushions when not in use.

If you have space for a hollow bench, this would work well for storage too. This will allow you to keep all your outdoor accessories dry and out of the way!

Try going faux

If you don’t want the hassle of maintaining your outside space, but you want it to be pleasing on the eye, fake it.

Fake flowers can be wound around a balcony railing or placed on a windowsill.

Fake plants can look just as good as real ones, brightening up your outside space without needing to be looked after.
