Your home doesn’t have to stop at the back door. If you have an available area, transforming your outdoor living space can make a great addition to your home. Our seasons don’t always lend themselves perfectly to the outdoor lifestyle, but this doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of your outdoor living space.

Below are a few ideas that can cost-effectively enhance your outside space, even if it’s a small outside space!

Light up your outdoor living space

One of the simplest yet most impactful changes you can make to your outdoor space is to add lighting. Don’t let darkness confine you indoors; instead, invest in outdoor lighting solutions that bring your space to life, even after sunset. Consider placing a few solar lanterns around your outdoor area, or hang up strings of outdoor fairy lights. The right lighting can work wonders, it can really transform your outdoor living space.

Add comfort with outdoor furnishings

Whatever you choose, make sure your outdoor furniture is designed to be outside in all weather. This is especially important if you don’t have the space to store it as soon as the weather changes. A table and chair set so that you can have a meal outside is ideal, but it’ll be dictated by the size of space you have. Ensure that your choices are not only stylish but also functional.

For added comfort, you can always jazz your outdoor living space up with some waterproof cushions. These can add as well a touch of luxury to your outdoor seating.

Prepare for British weather

If you plan to spend a lot of time in your outside area, it will have to factor in the Great British weather. Don’t let chilly evenings drive you indoors. To transform a simple outdoor area into a comfortable living space, fire pits are the perfect addition.

No longer will you have to move inside when the evening cools down. You can simply light a fire, pull the chairs in closer, and stay outside. Whether you fancy going for the traditional look, or a decorative fire pit like a chiminea, you’ll find something to suit your taste! However, always check with your local authority whether you are allowed open fires or not. If you live in a smoke controlled area, make sure you adhere to the authority’s list of authorised fuels that you can burn.

If you can’t have a fire pit in your outdoor living space, then think about investing in portable gas heaters or electric outdoor heaters. When choosing an outdoor heating solution, consider factors such as the size of your outdoor space, your heating needs, and your budget.

For the rainy days, you can think about using tarpaulins or shade sails. These tend to be among the most cost-effective options and can provide adequate rain cover. However they may not be as durable and may need to be replaced over time. Another option to consider is building a lean-to shelter to cover you. If you have a deck or patio, you can even consider adding a permanent roof structure. This can be a more substantial investment but provides long-term rain protection. Alternatively, put up wooden trellis that you can grow plants over. Not only will these options provide protection from light rain, but they will also add a touch of style to your outdoor space.

Install a garden room

If you have the space and the budget, you could consider hiring a carpenter to build a garden room or even a garden office. This is a great way to have a home outside your home, whether for work or relaxation. Depending on its size you may not need planning permission either, but it’s always worth checking out any restrictions that might apply to your area.

Brighten things up for your outdoor living space

The goal is to make your outside area as inviting as possible, so don’t forget to add some greenery! Plants in pots or garden beds add colour and beauty to any outdoor living space. If you are really limited on floor space or you prefer to keep a low maintenance outside area, consider hanging a few baskets to add pops of colour and charm.
